Urea is a highly effective moisturising and skin-conditioning ingredient widely used in cosmetic formulations for dry, rough and dehydrated skin. It is a component of the skin’s Natural Moisturising Factor (NMF) and helps attract and retain water within the skin.
Depending on the concentration used, Urea can provide both intensive moisturising and keratolytic benefits, making it particularly useful in formulations for rough, dry, flaky or thickened areas of skin.
Key Benefits
Provides intensive moisturisation and hydration
Helps improve moisture retention
Helps soften dry, rough and flaky skin
Supports the skin’s natural moisturising function
Helps improve skin smoothness and texture
At higher concentrations, helps loosen accumulated dead skin cells
Particularly useful for hand, foot and intensive body-care formulations
INCI Name: Urea Ingredient Type: Humectant / Skin-Conditioning / Keratolytic Active Solubility: Highly soluble in water Appearance: White crystalline powder or granules
Formulation Note: The function of Urea depends considerably on its concentration. Lower levels are primarily used for moisturising and hydration, while higher concentrations provide progressively stronger softening and keratolytic effects. Excessive heat during processing should be avoided, and the final formulation pH should be appropriately controlled to support stability.
For cosmetic formulation use. Suitable for creams, lotions, serums, gels, hand creams, foot-care products and formulations targeting very dry, rough or thickened skin.
