Why it is important to know your skin Type?

It is very strange that many people focus on products while not clear on their skin type. This poses a few challenges that can affect you brand and credibility.

As a manufacture in Tends lab, we have found that many clients come back and complain that the products are not working. The first question we ask is what skin type is the customer and what condition are they treating? That is the time we realise that the products were sold to customers without gathering info about their conditions.

Here is an example: You have an acne prone/Oily skin and would like to treat acne and acne marks. By applying rich emollients ingredients will worsen the condition. It is important to to stay from products that can be comedogenic, that has a potential to block pores therefore allowing for acne/pimple to start appearing.

The are 5 types of Skin Types:

  1. Oily Skin - results from excessive oil production on the face while it can be found on the body mostly chest and back. It is prone to male and females particularly during the adolescent stage. Oily skin will result in acne which be grade a grade A - D. Oily Skin can be a life long condition.
  2. Dry Skin - characterised by insufficient hydration of stratum corneum  due to lower content of natural moisturising factor or an altered lipid composition. When the barrier is compromised it leads to water loss exacerbating the drying of the skin. The skin will show signs of dullness, ashy and sometimes appeared stretched. Products containing humectants and emollients will assist with hydration.
  3.  Combination Skin - individual has 2 types of skin which is oil or dry. The oily is the T area on the face while dry on other parts of the face.
  4. Sensitive Skin - shown by hyper reactive to cosmetic products and unfavourable environmental factors such (Pollution, smoke, cold water, wind and rapid change in temperature changes. The condition can worsen with stress, alcohol, spicy & hot foods. Signs of being sensitive can be in stinging, burning & itching.
  5. Mature Skin - Aging is now the new challenge with many wanting to slow down signs of aging. This are characterised by sagging, wrinkles, pale & rough. be mindful that it is part of the process called growing up. It is important to care for your skin to slow down aging.
